A 3D structural representation of my take on the exoskeleton of a lotus root. The end result of simplifying an organic object and extruding the simplified version from a 2D model into a geometric 3D model.

A progress picture of the previous piece.

Medium: Pencil, marker, and pen on paper.
Size: 30x22.5in
Description: The simplification process and geometric breakdown of a lotus root’s anatomy.

Medium: String, marker, tracing paper, pencil, and masking tape on acrylic glass.
Size: 10x10x12in.
Description: A physical observation of two leaves falling, captured in space in different frames of time. The end result was created by meticulously mapping the movement of each leaf, as each quarter of a second passed. The top and bottom views of the piece show the leaves’ movement on an X and Y plane as time passes; and the acrylic poles add another dimension to that movement, showing how the leaves fall on a Z plane as time moves on.

A different point of view of the previous piece.

Medium: Colored paper, chicken wire, paper towels, and plastic jewels on foam board.
Size: 10x10x16in
Description: A model demonstration of the change from Summer to Fall, in the form of a beast. Leaves falling is a sign that winter is coming, and with the beauty of the season comes the bitterness of extreme weather: causing rain instead of snow, delays in public transportation, the homeless to freeze, and sea levels to rise as a result of global warming. The beast is a warning; and beautiful in a melancholic way. Each leaf was hand-glued piece by piece.

Medium: Acrylic paint, clay, and foam on canvas.
Size: 20x30in
Description: A 2D, semi 3D physical portrayal of sleep paralysis. The front view of the painting displays a hyper-realistic, normal-seeming room with an eerie color palette. The side-view of the painting reveals that not all is as it seems and some of the objects (including the chair and posters) are 3D and are coming to life, hiding the old hag sleep paralysis demon within them.
